Assessing the genetics of Osteoporosis

All chronic illnesses, including osteoporosis, are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain genetic abnormalities, called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s), are present in greater than 1% of the general population. On their own they do not cause disease, but do significantly raise risk for specific diseases. Thanks to innovative new genetic testing, we can now measure specific SNP’s via blood tests, to determine who is at higher risk. The following SNP’s have been linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis. They are available in a single test called the ‘OSTEOPOROSIS GENEOMICS PROFILE’:

If higher risk SNP’s are identified, steps can be taken to counteract increased genetic risk. Lifestyle changes, diet, supplements, exercise, hormones, etc. can both change the expression of genes plus compensate for their biochemical effects. Osteoporosis can be prevented if appropriate steps are taken! It is immensely easier to present osteoporosis than it is to reverse it. This profile is suitable for everyone interested in assessing their genetic risk of osteoporosis, although more so for individuals with a family history of osteoporosis.

Nutritional Healing can now offer clients this genetic screen for people living in Australia. The cost is $350 AUS and an appointment (in person or phone) will be required to review the results after results are in. Email us if you would like us to arrange this test for you. Similar testing is also available via the following other laboratories:
